Daily life

About 100 people live as extended families in the eleven households. The households range from 9 -14 people, generally comprising householders, their children, 4 -7 adults with special needs and 1 or 2 guest volunteers who preferably stay at least a year.

Our workday looks roughly as follows: we start the day together with breakfast. In some houses this is at 7.10am in others 7.30am. At 8.30am people will start their work, whether it is in the garden, households, the café, or on the farm etc. Lunch is at 12.45pm followed by a break until 2.30pm. Then afternoon work starts, until 6pm, with a tea break of 20 minutes around 4pm. Arrangements at weekends vary from house to house; please be aware that work in Camphill should not be seen as "a job" in the usual sense, but more as a way of life.

Together we are responsible for the home life of the community; we share meals, ideas, work experiences and the events of daily life, highlighting them by festival celebrations, birthday parties etc. Of course the preparing of meals, washing up, cleaning etc. also need to be shared amongst those living together in a household. Creating a home environment is one of our main tasks.
