Committed co-workers

If you wish to help carry this venture is important that you are interested in the joys and struggles of working together. The long-term group of co-workers is the managing group of the community, and you will be invited to join the core-managing group of the community after discussion of when this is appropriate for you or us.

it is also important for us that you are open to and interested in anthroposophy - and that it is your wish to live and/or work with "people with special needs" as this is the basis of our life in the community.

At this point most members of our community live in "extended family situations" in nine to ten households of varying size: i.e. a "house holder" couple, family, or single person, three to six "Oaklanders" (people with special needs) and possibly one to two young volunteers.

We are a "non-denominational" community, and co-workers and Oaklanders might come from a variety of religious and cultural backgrounds. However, we live our daily life based on Christian principles (also as defined by the philosopher Rudolf Steiner) and we celebrate the yearly Christian festivals. Together we create an interesting cultural life. We therefore welcome any initiative new members might bring along.

We generally try and support Waldorf education. Our children attend the Steiner schools at Wynstones/Gloucester and Hereford. Young children 3-6 years generally join the Kindergarten in the Grange, which is approximately 3 miles from us. Teenagers undertake their higher education in a variety of different places. Financial support for all of the above is the shared responsibility of the community and has to be negotiated before your arrival.

The guiding principle throughout is that you and your family are recompensed according to your need - and that is what we try to do, according to Rudolf Steiner's Fundamental Social Law. However, in the first 2 years you are given a spending guideline and also help with making a house budget to enable you to acclimatise to the needs-based system. A good deal of our remuneration is in kind (food, lodging, heating, laundry, access to vehicles for personal and family as well as community use).

As long-term community members, we do not own private cars. We have access to a number of community cars We also share in the task of maintaining these cars
